How the Australia visa process works

From application to Visa Lodgeβ€” here is exactly what to expect as a Nepali student.

1

Align your course with your academic background

Your chosen Australian course must be a logical upward progression from your +2 or Bachelor's degree. If you are changing fields or have study gaps, you must have solid work experience or a clear career reason to justify the switch. This is the foundation of your GS assessment.

2

Clear your IELTS or PTE Academic test

You cannot apply for an offer letter without English proficiency proof. Aim for IELTS 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5, or PTE Academic 50+. Competitive master's programs may require IELTS 6.5 or 7.0. Since Nepal is now at Assessment Level 3, case officers may request your original certificate even after university acceptance β€” have it ready.

3

Apply via a university-authorized education agency

Most Australian universities do not accept direct applications from Nepali students due to high-risk assessment tracking. You must work with a registered consultancy in Nepal that holds an official processing agreement with your target institution. This is not optional β€” it is the standard process.

4

Pass the institutional Genuine Student (GS) interview

Before granting an unconditional offer, the university will heavily vet you through their internal GS interview. You must prove genuine intent to study, demonstrate sharp knowledge of your specific course modules, and show you have researched the campus location and city. This has replaced the old GTE requirement from 2024.

5

Pay tuition deposit and secure your CoE

Once you pass the university's internal GS screening, pay your initial semester tuition deposit and purchase your compulsory Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) through Medibank, BUPA, or Allianz. The university then processes your payment and issues your official Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) code β€” required to open your visa portal.

6

Document trackable financial sponsorship

Prove you can cover AUD 29,710 annual living costs plus first-year tuition and travel. Funds must come through an education loan from an approved A-class commercial bank in Nepal or via mature, verifiable family savings with at least 3 months of consistent bank history. Sudden cash deposits trigger immediate refusals. Tax clearance certificates are required for self-employed sponsors.

7

Lodge your visa and complete VFS formalities

Create an ImmiAccount at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au, upload certified documents, and answer the 4 Genuine Student portal questions (maximum 150 words each). Pay the AUD 2,000 visa charge. Within days of filing, complete mandatory biometrics and medical examination at a designated VFS Global center in Nepal.
